Starting a Project

Getting your project off to a good start

Starting a project properly is vital for the success of the project.

Based on proven project management techniques the course will provide the opportunity to learn and practice the key tools and techniques for ensuring your projects are started professionally.

Course Aims:

  • gain knowledge of the key planning and control tools used at project start
  • gain knowledge on how Project Managers can carry out these initial planning and control responsibilities
  • gain "hands on" experience in the use of these key planning and control tools

PDD's
  • Identifying project best practice and Project Do's and Don'ts
Defining the project
  • The Project Terms of Reference
  • Knowing your objectives, defining the project boundaries and identifying the project constraints
Stakeholder identification
  • Know who all the stakeholders are and why they are key to project success
Stakeholder profiling
  • Understanding your stakeholders and sponsors. This is key input to status reporting, approval process and communication plans
Stakeholder influencing matrix
  • Who will give you support on the project and who could cause problems
Project Deliverables
  • The power of planning with deliverables. Developing Deliverable Flow Diagrams
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Understanding and assigning project roles and responsibilities using the VICARS matrix
Project risk assessment and analysis
  • Risk assessment and management. Using Project risk workshops. Identifying deliverables, risks and actions. Using a PIG (Probability/Impact Grid). Potential problem areas.
